Resident Bob VanBruggen brings a new level of craftsmanship to the community

Treyton Oak Towers resident Bob VanBruggen receives blue ribbon at Kentucky State Fair

We love celebrating the extraordinary achievements of our valued residents at Treyton Oak Towers.

Bob VanBruggen received two awards for his woodworking art at the 2024 Kentucky State Fair. He earned a blue ribbon for his wood mosaic of Secretariat and placed second for his intricate wood bowl with a decorative lid. Both pieces were created in the woodworking shop that Bob brought to Treyton Oak Towers when he became a resident.

Bob’s story is a remarkable example of how passion and creativity continue to thrive in our community.

His woodworking journey began with a heartfelt project for his granddaughter, crafting a table and chair for her to learn Braille. This project reignited Bob’s love for woodworking, transforming it into a fulfilling retirement hobby.

When he and his wife, Joyce, began planning to move to a retirement community, Bob feared he would have to give up his favorite hobby.

But, Treyton Oak Towers offered Bob and Joyce a unique solution: Moving his entire woodworking shop to a converted space on the fifth floor, equipped with a vacuum system and space to store his tools.

Since 2019, Bob has kept his passion alive and brought a new level of vibrancy and craftsmanship to the Treyton Oak Towers community.

Bob’s contributions to Treyton Oak Towers are inspiring. He has shared his skills and enthusiasm with fellow residents, turning woodworking into a communal activity. His impressive work includes crafting a stunning bar and lounge for residents and handcrafting pieces for our annual Christmas Bazaar and open house.

Treyton Oak Towers Gallery Hall features woodworking by Resident Bob VanBruggenBob’s art, particularly his intarsia pieces—mosaic-like images made from various wood scraps—are as stunning as they are personal. His intricate depictions of subjects such as the Holy Family and Secretariat, for which he received the State Fair Blue Ribbon, showcase his ability to bring wood to life through dimensional effects and artistic vision.

Beyond his creations, Bob has generously shared his expertise with residents and fostered a spirit of creativity among residents, proving that it’s never too late to explore new passions and inspire others.

Bob’s achievements highlight the essence of joyful living at Treyton Oak Towers. He and Joyce demonstrate how engaging in meaningful activities and pursuing one’s interests can lead to profound satisfaction and vibrant living at any age.

Congratulations to Bob VanBruggen on his well-deserved recognition! We look forward to celebrating many more of his artistic accomplishments and enjoying the beauty he brings to our community.
